What Is a Concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. The impact causes dysfunction within brain cells and decreased blood flow, resulting in temporary deficits in brain function.

Common symptoms

• Loss of consciousness
• Headache
• Pressure in the head
• Neck pain
• Nausea or vomiting
• Cognitive problems
• Dizziness
• Balance problems

Why Speed Matters

Following a concussion, it’s recommended that you seek the care of a healthcare professional with training and experience in concussion as soon as possible. In fact, recent studies have concluded that one of the best predictors of concussion recovery is how quickly you’re assessed at a concussion clinic.

A period of relative “symptom-limited” physical and cognitive rest is generally recommended for the first 24–48 hours after injury. After this, a gradual, supervised increase in mental and physical activity begins. If symptoms are still present after 7–10 days, an individualised treatment and rehabilitation programme should be started.

The evidence points to early application of specific cardio exercise, vestibular and visual rehabilitation, treatment for the neck and associated whiplash, dietary and supplement guidance, and patient education — all of which form the core of our approach at Reboot.

Recovery Stages (graduated return to sport)

We never rush a return. Each stage is symptom-limited and cleared by your Reboot practitioner before progressing to the next.
• Stage 1 — Limited Activity: symptom-limited rest, gentle daily activity
• Stage 2 — Light Aerobic Exercise: walking or stationary cycling, low intensity
• Stage 3 — Sport-Specific Exercise: running or skating drills, no head-impact risk
• Stage 4 — Non-Contact Practice: more complex training, added coordination and load
• Stage 5 — Full Contact Practice: medical clearance obtained, normal training resumes
• Stage 6 — Return to Play: full recovery complete, back in competition

Pre-season Baseline Testing

Multimodal pre-season testing — also known as baseline concussion testing — is a series of physical and cognitive tests that map healthy brain function. We test balance, reaction time, memory, visual tracking speed and more, giving us a picture of how your brain works when you’re well.
If you go on to sustain a concussion, we compare your results against this baseline to see exactly where the deficits are and how significant they are — sharpening both our treatment plan and our judgement of when it’s safe to return to sport.
